Eindhoven, March 9. On Monday evening around ten o'clock, an accident occurred at the Dutch Railways yard in Eindhoven, near the coal-fired power station of the van der Horst company. This accident claimed the life of 45-year-old shunter B. v.d. Berg, a resident of Venkelhof. For reasons that remain unexplained, van der Berg was run over by one of a row of five uncoupled running wagons.
In very serious condition, after Dr. Raupp administered first aid on the scene, he was taken to the Binnenziekenhuis (Hospital), where he died a few hours later. A colleague of the victim, who had worked with him all day, was so shaken by the accident that he was also taken to the hospital. The victim is survived by a wife and three children. Son of

Jacobus was a mischievous boy in his youth. In 1901, he appeared in court for stealing turnips and black radishes with a friend to earn some pocket money. In 1903, he was caught searching for duck eggs with a neighbor on a hunting ground. Both times, he served several days in jail. National Militia: on March 14, 1906, he was incorporated into the 3rd Regiment, 8th Division of Fortress Artillery. On March 20, 1907, he was court-martialed in the 2nd Militia Division. On March 21, he was discharged without assault and was sent to the Utrecht prison on June 7, 1907. He appealed to the High Military Court and was sentenced to a fine of 3 guilders (or 3 days' imprisonment) and a four-week prison sentence for 1st public drunkenness, 2nd resisting rebellion by violently resisting officials on duty, and 3rd simple insulting of officials on duty, verbally abusing them in their presence.
He served refresher training in 1909, 1911, and 1913. He was mobilized on August 1, 1914, and transferred to the Landweer 2IV 3 L.W.A. in 's-Hertogenbosch on January 1, 1916. He was granted leave on January 9, 1919, and demobilized on September 21, 1919.

Willem was exempted from military service because he had a brother who had served. Nevertheless, he served in the First World War. That was probably a good thing. When the family fell into poverty after the death of his mother, his health deteriorated. In the service he was given better food, which improved his constitution. His lungs in particular turned out to be his weak point; he was in the sanatorium with TB in both the thirties and the fifties of the 20th century. His bad lungs may also have been the cause of his heart condition later in life; he lived with a pacemaker for years. Willem was good at woodworking. With the help of working drawings, he made wooden toys in his spare time. Around St. Nicholas, these were sold in the front room. At the family doctor's office, bottles of injection fluids were kept for him, which could serve as milk bottles on a milk truck, for example. The inside was colored to imitate different types of milk products, the caps were aluminum-colored. With st. Nicolaas his grandson Evert had asked for a Meccano box and he received a beautiful box which consisted of beautifully imitated wooden Meccano parts. Later that evening, of course, the real box emerged from a package.
At an advanced age, he felt like taking up his old profession as a hobby again. He saw an opportunity to get tobacco and occasionally made cigars at home for his own use. The small tobacco that was left over (called short) was made into pipe tobacco. Son of

Berend was short, just like his mother and his sister 'Dien'. He could, as was said at the farewell to his employer Grasso, speak frankly and had a strong sense of justice. This became apparent, for example, when he applied for a job at a bicycle repair shop in his younger years. The bicycle repairman wanted to know whether his future servant was Catholic, to which Berend parried with the question whether Catholic bicycles would be constructed differently! Berend went to evening school and eventually ended up at the Wilton-Feijnoord shipyard where he became a welder. There he befriended Adrie Smolders who was married to Annie Koers. There he met her sister Martha who regularly stayed there, but it was certainly not love at first sight.
During the razzia of Rotterdam, November 10+11, 1944, the eligible men in Schiedam were also picked up. Berend and his two brothers Eef and Wim were taken to Germany and ended up in Hildesheim. They came to work in a factory. On February 26, 1945, Eef broke a leg. He lay in the St. Bernwardskrankenhaus in Hildes Heim until March 23. This, together with the regular bombardments, later turned out to give them the opportunity to escape. The boys found shelter with a widow in Germany on the way. The boys went on a raid for her, including in empty houses to get food. The widow took care of the boys. After some time they moved on and ended up in Limburg before the liberation of 5 May. They were interned in Heerlerheide. Berend, trained as a metalworker and welder, found temporary work as an assistant to the local blacksmith. He declined an offer to come to the already liberated 's-Hertogenbosch - without his brothers. As the eldest, he wanted to stay with his brothers and bring them home safely.
Because of his marriage in March 1946, he ended up in 's-Hertogenbosch. His first employer there was Daf. After some time he applied for a job at Grasso in 's-Hertogenbosch, notorious for its poor remuneration. Berend asked the hourly rate that was common in the west of the Netherlands, 73 cents! Grasso needed good welders and eventually could not avoid paying for this. Although he was asked not to talk about his hourly wages, as a good union member he leaked it to colleagues anyway. In the long term, Grasso therefore had no choice but to adjust the wages of others to those of Berend.
After a disagreement in 1955, he was wrongly punished for something, Berend left and went to work at Scheepswerf De Waal in Zaltbommel. Quite a change. To the station by bike, with the local train to Zaltbommel and then by bus to the wharf. Because Berend was small in stature, he was often put to work in the double bottom of the ship. When a ship was launched on a day when the children did not go to school, his wife went with the children to Zaltbommel, to watch the pageant sitting In 1960 he went back to Grasso. At Grasso he participated in welding competitions and was one of the Grasso employees who were sent to the competitions in Utrecht. Over time, in addition to autogenous and electric welding, he also learned to weld with protective gas.
By the age of 60 his joints began to give problems. He was then put to work in the plate cutting plant. He was 62 years old when he parted ways with Grasso on January 24 due to the aforementioned problems. During his working life at Grasso, Berend was also a member of the works council for the FNV for a number of years.on a bench against the bulwark near the harbor.
In 's-Hertogenbosch, Berend was an active member of the industry workers association NVV for many years. After the war, contributions were still collected by local board members. As proof of payment, they received a stamp that had to be stuck in the receipt book. For many years he went through all kinds of weather to collect the contribution, until a giro account had become commonplace for most people. The advantage of the stamp system was that people with questions for the union could pass them on immediately when paying the contribution. Berend remained a member of the union until his death.
Berend loved his allotment garden, which may have been a good addition to the household budget in the early years. When he himself no longer had an allotment garden at a later age, he helped a neighbor on his allotment garden for many years. Already in his early years he loved to draw and he made paintings for the children's room with illustrations from a magazine as an example. Once retired, he also learned to work with watercolor and other types of paint. He also made paintings of marquetry. But he also made a beautiful sewing box on a leg, for example, he could also work with wood. Later when they lived in the 5th Battles a new garden fence had to be made. Wim brought steel pipe, bends and his CO2 welding machine. Despite the fact that he had not done any welding for a long time, he could easily weld the fence together using the tubes.

Elisa was a member of the resistance. She provided assistance to people in hiding and secret agents. She was also involved in sending information to the Allies and distributing illegal pamphlets. She was in poor health. When she was arrested by the Germans, she was recovering from her fourteenth operation, which she had undergone in August 1944. Initially, she was locked up in the House of Detention in 's-Hertogenbosch. Via the Wehrmacht prison, Anrath and Düsseldorf, she ended up in the Arbeitererziehungslager in Heddernheim in Hirzenheim (Germany). This had been a women's camp since 1944. When the Allies penetrated deeper and deeper into Nazi Germany, the guards made preparations to evacuate the camp. Some of the prisoners were evacuated. In the early morning of 26 March 1945, 81 women, including Lies van der Klijn-Wooning, were led into the forest together with six male prisoners at a distance of one kilometre from the camp. There, the prisoners were shot dead by an SS commando with machine guns. The six men had been ordered to dig a large pit the day before, in which a petrol depot was supposedly to be built. A second Dutch victim was 23-year-old Leentje van Es from Arnhem. Hirzenheim was liberated a few days later.
The Americans found the mass grave on the basis of information from the local population. The identity of only one prisoner was established. Since 1959, the victims have been buried namelessly in the war cemetery of the Arnsburg monastery near the city of Lich. Daughter of

Huibert was drafted into the National Militia. He joined the Grenadiers & agers regiment on 08-03-1895. He worked from 16-06-1898 to 28-01-1899 at the State Railways. He was dismissed for arbitrarily abandoning his service.
After this he was employed as a Field Guard in Aalst. The family went to live at Dorpsstraat number 3. Because the job as a field guard did not pay off, he had a few side jobs, including being a municipal messenger. In the newspaper we can read how in 1908 a few notorious poachers were arrested by him and two colleagues.
In 1905 he arrested someone suspected of various crimes. When this person was released again in 1910, he attacked Huibert with a knife, whereby Huibert was lucky and only wounded. The perpetrator went to prison for 5 years, but on 14-09-1916 it happened again. This time Huibert managed to overpower him. And after an appeal the perpetrator was again in prison for 5 years. Anton Koers was born in the river area of ??Maas and Waal, the Betuwe, and lived in his youth with his parents, brother and sisters in a house on the fort. He could tell fascinating stories, also about this place during the Second World War.
To clarify, the area of ??Heerewaarden was a kind of no man's land from the autumn of 1945. Both German patrols and allies regularly came to the village. But the Germans were stationed in the nearby fort Sint Andries until 23 April 1945. The history of Heerewaarden at that time can be found in the diary of Cornelis Pieter Visser.
Anton was 15 years old and came home from school. There a drunken German soldier came towards him with a loaded rifle pointed at him. He had to walk around their house. And his mother and sister watched this happen anxiously from an upstairs window. His older brother Jo and his friend were pressing rapeseed oil in the shed and were beckoned by their mother. They had to go and free Ton, before the drunken German might fire a bullet at Ton.
Both of them, armed with an axe and a big hammer, crept up to the German soldier and wanted to bash his brains in! At that moment Anton's father appeared, dressed in a blue uniform and with a big navy cap on his head. The German soldier was shocked and full of awe he slunk off to his comrades. How lucky he was not injured, because otherwise the Germans might have shot his brother and others dead on the spot without mercy...
On New Year's Eve in 1944 almost the entire village went to church. While singing the song: hours, days, months, years pass like a gust of wind, suddenly the hissing sound of a stray flying bomb, a V1, was heard. It was actually intended for London in England, but now seemed to be crashing into the church! Everyone held their breath in great fear. Fortunately the rocket landed nearby in the Maas and all the inhabitants were spared. After this, everyone thanked God in prayer that they might live!
At the end of the war, the allied armies of the English, Americans and Canadians advanced to the North. Anton Koers' family had to flee from the fort, because it was being shelled and was in no man's land between the two armies. They were then given shelter in Heerewaarden. Anton Koers knew the fort and the area like the back of his hand. A group of Canadian soldiers on patrol asked him to go along as a guide to explore the fort. He was brave and proud and gladly did so. Fortunately, he was not injured in this event. When he told this at home, his parents were furious with him. He could have been shot dead in a firefight. After finishing his seamans studies on 25 August 1908 he joined the KPM Koninklijke Paketvaart Maatschappij. He lived in a bed and breakfast owned by the widow Mrs van der Paardt-Ziedses des Plantes.
The KPM was the dominant inter-island shipping line in Indonesia during the last half century of the colonial era. KPM maintained connections between the islands of Indonesia, and supported the unification of the Dutch colony economy as the Netherlands expanded its territory across the Indonesian archipelago. The company brought inter-island commerce through the capital, Batavia (now Jakarta) rather than to Singapore, which shifted economic activity to Java. The line's routes, beyond the home islands, included services to the ports of Singapore and Hong Kong, Shanghai, Manila, Saigon; the Australian ports of Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide; African ports such as Durban, East London, Port Elizabeth, Mossel Bay, Cape Town, Zanzibar, Mombasa, and the Indian Ocean ports of Réunion and Mauritius and Mahé.
He operated out of to Batavia in Indonesia. He sailed several ships during his career and became captain of 5955 ton ship Plancius. Prior to that he was captain of the van der Wijk (Possibly Van Waerwijck 3040 tons). KPM provided passenger and cargo transport around Indonesia and Asia. Based in Batavia (now named Jakarta). He retired on 10 November 1934 as commodore of the fleet. Son of

Marie Antoinette Euphrosine had two sisters Mien and Tien and a brother Nicolaas. She was housewife and mother and a very independent lady because Willem Sr. was away for long periods on the ships. If any children got out of hand she would threaten them with a 'pantoffel' (slipper), she would throw and never miss. In 1935 the family moved to the Rembrandtlaan 26, Heemstede, Holland when husband Willem retired from KPM. She always hoped to go back to Indonesia where they still owned a house in Batavia, after the education of the children. The Second World War made this impossible. The House was forcibly repossessed by the Indonesian Government for a very small financial consideration after the war. The house was at 31 Jalan Salemba Raya a street now populated with government buildings and hotels. She died of a heart attack in Heemstede on 10 May 1969. Daughter of

Willem left the Dutch Indies to attend school in Holland where he lived in Helmond and Den Bosch for High School after which he went to the Zeevaart School in den Helder. He was third mate till the end of the second World War where he was based in London. After the war he became captain in the socalled 'wilde vaart'. He had had mumps during his teener years which left him unable to have children but able to court many ladies. He married four times. He was always very generous for the family always bearing gifts on his shore leaves. He died of menigitus after carnaval in Brabant in March 1972.

Albert Janssen, Eepi, as he was known in the family was born on the 24th of May 1919 in Batavia (now Jakarta, Indonesia) .
He was sent to school in Holland around the age of eleven, where he stayed with Oom Jan van Wijnen on the Watermolenwal in Helmond and later his fathers sisters Tante Too en Tante Hannie in Den Bosch. In 1934 at the age of 15, he joined the family in Heemstede, when they repatriated.
He attended the Christelijke Lyceum in Haarlem. Hereafter he attended the Kweekschool voor de Zeevaart (Nautical College) in Amsterdam. He went to sea with Rotterdam Lloyd in 1939.
During the Second World War he was based in London with the Dutch Merchant Navy. After the war he joined KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and was assistant and Station Manager in Copenhagen, Nuremberg and Munchen before becoming Manager of Stations UK and Ireland at London's Heathrow Airport.
In 1959 He was appointed General Manager of KLM and Managing Director of Kroonduif the Dutch New Guinea airline, in Biak at the age of 40. For his work in this period he obtained the royal honour of Ridder in de Orde of Oranje Nassau (Knight in the Order of Onanje Nassau). 1962 after Biak he could not settle at KLM's head office and left the company.
He became General Manager of a 'Slakken Company at The Hoogovens in Ijmuiden until 1968, when he became Director of Operations for Europe for World Airways. He enjoyed this job but he had a massive heart attach at the age of 51, which lead to his retirement in 1970. With both sons independent he retired to the boating village of Hamble where he dedicated his time to his family and several boating endeavors.
He died of lung cancer in 1990 at the age of 72.
During the war he worked as third, second and first mate on Dutch merchant navy ships operating mainly in convoys on the North Atlantic runs.
One expects to have heard stories about the fight against fascism, but they just saw it as a job. The stories we heard were of the pranks carried out in the ports. One was a dare to dress up in a white coat with his mates and remove a fish tank from the foremost restaurant in New York and place it in another.

A problem arose because the parents had a child baptized in 1804 as Johannis, in 1805 as Jan and in 1810 as Johannes. In 1831, according to the certificate, a Johannes died as a soldier at the age of 21.
In 1838, however, a Johannes Reuvers with the same parents married who said he was born around 1810. According to the marriage supplement concerning the National Militia, the groom was the last to have fulfilled obligations with his 8 years of service in the Grenadier department. In that case, he must have been at least 28 years old.
The Grenadier register at the National Archives has him registered under number 2712. He was incorporated in the 13th Infantry Department for the 1829 draft and taken over by the Grenadier Department in January 1831. In June 1931, he was engaged for 6 years. In 1835, he became a corporal. Because of the uprising in Belgium he participated in campaigns there in the years 31 to 1834. On April 5, 1832 he received the metal cross for that. He was passported on July 26, 1837. The couple also had a son Jan in 1810, aged 4. Given the fact that the first Johannis is married according to his death certificate, the Jan born in 1805 must be the Johannes who died in 1831. Son of
